Eric Foner is my favorite historian. I will always remember attending his lecture at UAB in November of 2013 on Lincoln.
Foner is the foremost American historian on Reconstruction.
Book reviews and articles on various topics and subjects.
P. 96 "On Jefferson Davis" Few historians have anything good to say about Robert E. Lee including William J. Cooper, Jr. I have read several Davis biographies. I doubt if I will read this one.
Davis never outgrew his intrinsic racism. Racism was certainly widespread in the 19th Century, but also certainly not universal. We are still living in its legacy.
P. 101 "The Making and the Breaking of the Legend of Robert E. Lee." An article in the NY Times 8-28-17. A brief scholarly summary of Lee, as good as it gets.
