Not many people realize that the South once had some of the most liberal Senators in the country. There was Albert Gore, Sr. of Tennesee as well as his son. There were John Sparkman and Lister Hill of Alabama. There were Terry Sanford of North Carolina, Dale Bumpers and William Fulbright of Arkansas, and many others. They may have had to vote wrong on civil rights, but otherwise they were Franklin Roosevelt New Dealers. Lest we forget our legacy.
