Ezra Klein on Polarization and His New Book on Polarization on BookTV

We are polarized but we have been polarized worse in times past like the Civil War and the 1930's.
What is different is the way we are polarized today.
The polarization is different today: forget the polarization of the past.
The opposition to polarization can be suppression rather than agreement and comity.
Former one party rule in the South more than today.
Cost of comity can be suppression.
It takes a long time for old identities to change.
South became Republican into the 90's.
False peace of suppressing disagreements.  Prior mixed parties.
Not a way to dissolve political disagreements.  A political system problem.
Group identity is king.
We are sensitive to group identity.
Identity easy to activate.
Post civil rights sets off a sorting: Republican white/Democrats mixed
Parties become idealogical and other differences.
Group identity is powerful.
Underlying trends the same even if there no Obama and Trump.
Hard to follow Klein.
A white backlash nativism Trump understood.
The country really is changing toward the Democratic side.
Politics is like a time machine.
Cultue is ten years ahead.  It's moving very fast.  Country is changing quickly.  Majority minority coming.  Right is panicking.  Both sides feel threatened.  Heightened tensions.
Republican politics is apocalyptic.
