Our Russian waiter at the Village Tavern last night tells us he grew up in a Russian town in Southern Russia close to Georgia. Isn't Gorbachev from Georgia? I ask him. No, he responds, Stalin was from Georgia, where he wanted to be a priest before venturing off into politics and changing world history. The Great Patriotic War is embalmed in the mind of every Russian student. Russians led by St...alin with 20 million casualties saved us all from Nazism. I can't argue with that. But then Stalin snookered FDR at Yalta and killed a few million Russians on his own. What goes around comes around, or vice versa, our Russian waiter wittily concludes. (He is a chemistry major at UAB planning on getting a Phd). Unlike Americans, Russians know their history. We left him a good tip.
