Robert Caro - The Passage of Power (2)

In these so far 4 volumes of Lyndon Johnson biography you'll find just about everything you'd ever want to know about the man.  Caro goes into extensive detail, but it's never boring.  The big event in this volume, which roughly covers 1958 to 1964, is JFK's selection of LBJ as his running mate in 1960.  Lyndon Johnson became president on that fateful day November 22, 1963.  If Johnson had not become president upon Kennedy's death, it seems to me that the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the '65 voting rights act, and Medicare would not have become law, for it was only LBJ's political skill that led to the passage to those country-changing laws.  If JFK had picked anybody else, well, we'll never know what would have happened.
