Eudora Welty - The Optimist's Daughter

I thought I should read some Welty so I read this novel. I was disappointed.

Laurel Hand returns to the South upon the illness & death of her father in New Orleans and rediscovers her roots in Mississippi. She as to deal with her silly stepmother and the small Missisippi town where she grew up.

Supposedly she comes to terms with her past, herself, and her parents in the last chapter, but I don't get it. The last chapter is suppoed to be "deep" and "searching," but again I don't get it. Maybe one day someone will the meaning of the novel to me.
