Willie Morris - North Toward Home (4)

Willie Morris begins his story (Mississippi #1) with a description of the land and the people and his family history. He reminds us that he grew up before shopping malls and Wal Marts and middle class prosperity. He speaks reverently of the Delta: that flat area of land so prone to flooding and because of flooding so rich and productive for farming that lies between the Yazoo River and the mighty Mississippi River. What I know of that land comes from visiting Tunica, which is part of the Delta, and I can testify to its flatness and I see when I'm there what huge farmland it is.
