In this memoir I learn that Coach Bowden seriously considered going to LSU after the 1979 season. He decided that he would leave FSU for LSU if his team failed to beat the Bengal Tigers in Baton Rouge that September. FSU won the game and Bowden stayed for the duration at Florida State.
He reveals that in December of 1980 that President Philpott offered him the Auburn job after Barfield had been fired. Bobby would have owed FSU $750,000, a heft sum in those days, if he left Florida State. We'll fight it out in court, Bowden says that Philpott told him. But no move was made. I get the feeling that Bobby Bowden really didn't want to coach at Auburn.
He definitely wanted to coach at Alabama. The Red Elephants could have had Bowden after the 1986 season after Coach Perkins left for Tampa Bay, but they hired Bill Curry instead. A good thing for Auburn!
