Hillary Rodham Clinton - Living History (Book Review) Final

This autobiography was published in 2003 shortly after Hillary was elected U.S. Senator for New York.  It is interesting to read now given what has happened since then.

Hillary had a solid middle-class upbringing in the suburbs of Chicago.  The thing that sticks with me first is that she was raised a Republican.  She was a Goldwater Girl in 1964.  Her father was a staunch Republican until at least late in life, and he certainly influenced her.  She calls him a "staunch conservative."   Her mother didn't seem to very political.  She entered college as a freshman a Republican.  She graduated from Wellesley a Democrat.  She worked on Capitol Hill on the Nixon impeachment committee in the House.  She went to the 1968 Republican Convention in Miami as part of a group of Republicans who tried to get Rockefeller nominated over Goldwater but to no avail.

During her time as First Lady she learned to stay focused while living in the eye of many storms.  She visited 78 nations. Part of who she is today is from the people and places she's met traveling abroad. That is amazing!  Hillary has paid her dues to be President.  P. XIV

For all of her life, Hillary has been a lightning rod for conservatives and liberals.  It's amazing that it seems that she has always been controversial.  P. XV

"I was born an American in the middle of the 20th Century, a fortunate time and place.  I came of age on the crest of tumultuous social change and took part in the political battles fought over the meaning of America and its role in the world."  P. 1

Hillary was born October 26, 1947.  Somehow it startles me that she is only 2 years older than me.  P. 2

Her Mother wanted her to learn about the world thru reading books.  They went to the library every week.  P. 10

Her Daddy was a tight-fisted Republican who abhored debt and waste.  P. 11

Her freshman year in college she was President of the Young Presidents, but the Viet Nam War and civil rights were pushing her leftward toward the Democratic Party.  It's hard to understand today our obsession with Viet Nam in that era with the draft and lottery as opposed to today's all-volunteer armed forces.   P. 31

By the time she was a college junior, she had gone from being a Goldwater Girl to supporting Senator Eugene McCarthy's anti-war campaign.  Hillary learned quickly.   P. 32

Talking about Guernica when 20th Century warfare being in 1937.  P. 77

Hillary learned the power of negative ads in 1980.  P. 90

Hillary has been thru it all.  She has developed thick skin unlike Donald Trump.  P. 103

Great and heartwarming friendship with Jackie.  P. 135

Intellect in a woman is unbecoming.  P. 106

Take criticism seriously, but not personally.  P. 110

Virginia Clinton was friends with Barbra Streisand.  She was always the belle of the ball.  P. 126

Her Secret Service nickname was "Evergreen."  P. 137

The struggle for her health care initiative is so tragic.  P. 147

It's amazing how the Whitewater hullabaloo went on for years and nothing ever came of it.  P. 194

The complexity of heath care boggles my mind.  P. 230

It's a shame she had to use Dick Morris, one of the great political scumbags of all time.  P. 248

She admits she "botched" health care.  P. 258

Bill's welfare reform is still controversial.  P. 366

Soldiering on.  Perhaps this is her theme.  P. 439

Hillary skiing!  P. 448

Her winning campaign in New York shortly before writing this book is amazing.  P 508
