Since I was born in 1949 I do not have a first-hand feeling for the 40's. All
I know is WW2, FDR, Truman, Casablanca, the Baby Boomers of which I am proudly
one, things like that. Now we find out that Lauren Bacall, one of the defining
movie stars of the 40's, has left us. Who's left from the 40's now? About
Bacall: yes, I know enough to know that she is a cultural icon. I don't need a
first-hand feeling for a decade to recognize a cultural icon.
