Blue Jasmine

I finally watched Blue Jasmine, from Woody Allen.  Fabulous movie.  I read that the story is similar to A Streetcar Named Desire, but I have not read any Tennessee Williams to know.  It is a study in the breakdown of narcissism, the lack of self-identity, and choosing the pursuit of fantasy over dealing with reality.  Peter Sarsgaard, who plays Dwight, said that Woody gave him only the portion of the script that had his part.  So, he did not know the story while filming.  Indeed, Cate Blanchett, who plays Jasmine, and Sally Hawkins, who plays her sister Ginger, may be the only actors who got the full script.  How interesting.

With Blue Jasmine, Match Point, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, and Midnight in Paris, Allen has returned to form in his later years.
