The 18th Century created the concept of a liberal arts education. A liberal arts education at that time was synonymous with the concept of a "gentleman." Alas, the 18th Century concept of the gentleman has faded into historical oblivion. I have never aspired to be a gentleman in the 18th Century sense, but I have always aspired to think I have a liberal arts education and temperament, self-achieved as an autodidact. This is very important to me, exceedingly important to me in my self-image and aspirations.
