 Whitehead said that philosophy is a series of footnotes to Plato. Fundamentalists seek the original meaning of sacred texts from the supposed original meaning from a long-ago and vanished historical context. Important yes, but interpretation needed today if it is to be real.

Originalists seek the original meaning of the Constitution (as if there is such a thing) from the authors to force their interpretative decisions.

Even though I am historically minded in order to establish proper context, I look forward. Things change. We must also change and adapt to new truths and facts.
