Tomorrow I will meet with my two classes on poverty and inequality for the last time this semester. I plan to pose the question asked by Rawls, if you were negotiating how to construct a just and fair society, how much inequality would you be willing to tolerate under the following condition. Your own place in that society's social structure is unknown. Rawls argued that inequality is only just when those at the bottom of the status order are better off with it than they would be without it.
