David Frum - Trumpocracy (Book Review)

David Frum is a former Republican who saw the light and now trolls Republicans, spreading the word about how they are destroying our country.  Hence, this book.

He points out that authoritarianism is on the march in parts of the world, and the U.S. is not exception.  We are not exceptional in this regard.  Trump and his followers are a threat to our democracy.  The crisis is here now.

The tenets and accepted practices  of American democracy are being challenged.  As the Trump family enrich themselves, they are putting the rest of us at risk.

What is happening now would have once been inconceivable, but it's now real.

The run-up to Trump came after 8 years of Barack Obama, opposed in everything he tried to do by an opposition party dedicated to limiting him to one term, and then enraged by his reelection.  P. 6

Then there is the pseudo Republican Party fear of a Hillary apocalypse.  P. 43

The white male fear of Hillary Clinton is something I do not understand.

Trump demands loyalty from his minions, but never returns it. P, 90

Trumpocracy as a system of power rests not on deregulation, but on nonregulation, not on deconstructing the state but on breaking the state in order to plunder the state.  P. 101

Trump's dishonestly is in a class by itself.  P. 104

Trump is driving young people away from the Republican Party the author says.  i sincerely hope so. P. 228

The Republican Party will outlast Trump.  I am not so sure.  P. 229

As Trump is cruel, vengeful, egoistic, ignorant, lazy, greedy, and crazy, we must be responsible, strong, and informed.  They go low; we go high says Hillary Clinton.  P. 235

We are living thru a dangerous time.  I do not see much reason for hope at present.

This book is somber without a lot of hope.  The author's only advice is that we cannot behave like Trump in return and that we must become better citizens.  Ha, ha.

The damage that Trump and the Republicans are inflicting on the country is serious and far-reaching. I do not see this damage being overcome in my lifetime.
