David M. Potter - The South and the Sectional Conflict

David Potter is currently my favorite historian.

"Thus we were once told that the South was a land cavaliers, the North, an abode of Puritans; or that the South stood for state's rights, while the North stood for federal supremacy."  Later historians said this was too superficial.  Then came Beard's argument of Southern agrarianism  vs.Northern industrialism and the inevitable clash.  Which evolved into a clash of different civilizations incapable maintaining a union.  What seems inevitable is that historians reach for simplistic answers.   P. 74-75
