In Chapter 4 the Coach says that he does not read newspapers or listen to media commentaries about his program. He has people in the athletic dept. who keep him apprised of any damaging reports he needs to be aware of as a head coach. His relationships with writers is strictly professional.
He says he was truly shocked when Jay Jacobs called him about applying for the Auburn job. He had no idea it was coming. After all, he was 5 & 19 as a head coach!
You read this chapter and you see that Gene Chizik truly loves Auburn. He talks about Tiger Walk and the eagle flying and the stands full of orange and you know that his affection for Auburn is real.
His hiring at Auburn was hectic and messy. It was messy because there were hard feelings that exist to this day at Iowa State. But we Auburn people are certainly glad he's at our place now.
