In the 50's and 60's you'd walk into a typical middle-class home and see Reader's Digest condensed books, a set of World Book encyclopedias, James Michener novels, and tacky bric-a-bracs, a sign of culture of the time. Heck, that was high culture of the time. I miss those days, I really do.
