Black did not get an undergraduate degree and, in part for that reason, he was a disciplined lifelong learner reading voraciously, often primary works, from early adulthood. It probably was a northern publication in his early years on the Supreme Court that first suggested incorrectly that he was “overwhelmed” by northeastern intellectuals and started reading the classics.
