The student of history is always aware that what has happened in the past was not inevitable. Things could always have been different.
The men at the Constitutional Convention considered other options. A 7 yr. presidential term. Hamilton desired the chief executive to serve for life in good behavior. The Congress pick the chief executive which would have given us a parlimentary system of governance. Madison wanted a federal negative over state laws. And how really did we end up with the Electoral College except that the men of the convention did not trust the people in a direct popular election?
Many things could have been made different.
