In my younger and more callow years my father gave me some advice that I've been turning over in my mind ever since.
"Whenever you feel like criticizing any one," he told me, "just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had."
My father was right even though it never made much difference. Life was never a ladder I was trying to ascend, just a means to keep going. Two roads did I encounter frequently. The one I usually picked always seemed sufficient.
