We now know that if partisans are corrupt, deluded or just plain opportunistic enough and they have the will and the means to lie without shame or restraint, they can circumvent all the checks and balances that were built into the Constitution to prevent a president who plotted a coup against the United States from returning to power.
January 6, 2025, should be a reminder of the assault on our democracy four years ago. Instead, I'm afraid it's yet another reminder that far too few people in this country actually care.

Sunday afternoon after preachin’ and dinner is a good time for readin’ and nappin’ with Sunday fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and creamed corn. Ain’t like Momma used to fix, but nothing ain’t the same anymore. A quiet time; nothing needs doin’ till tomorrow. Everything stays open now on Sundays. I miss the days when ever- thing closed up on Sundays. You have to make up your own peace & quiet these nowadays.

Tempt me with a simplistic promise — lower grocery prices overnight! End the war in a day! — or shoot me up with the rhetorical narcotic of the latest conspiracy theory, and you’ve got my vote.

There is now an interesting effort by people such as Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to combine cultural conservatism and economic nationalism with the radical reform of government. That could be an appealing ideology for many voters who are frustrated by a government in which nothing seems to work that well.
On the other side, if Democrats do not learn some hard lessons from the poor governance in many blue cities and states, they will be seen as defending cultural elites, woke ideology and bloated, inefficient government. That might be a formula for permanent minority status.
